Mrvan, Niemeyer competing to represent Region in Congress

Northwest Indiana’s Democratic representative in Congress will compete this year against a Republican opponent who actually has previously won an election.

U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan, D-Highland, was nominated without opposition for a third term Tuesday by Democrats living in Indiana’s 1st Congressional District of Lake, Porter and northwest LaPorte counties.

He’ll face Lake County Councilman Randy Niemeyer, R-Cedar Lake, at the Nov. 5 general election after Niemeyer defeated Mark Leyva, of Highland, and Ben Ruiz, of East Chicago, for the Republican nomination.

Niemeyer, who also serves as chairman of the Lake County Republican Party, is an unusually experienced opponent for a U.S. House seat that’s continuously been held by Democrats for more than nine decades, in part because Northwest Indiana Republicans typically nominate first-time or perennially unsuccessful candidates to run for Congress.
