Powerful coastal storm to bring wind and heavy rain to state

A powerful coastal storm is expected to lead to a damp and windy weekend in Delaware on the first day of fall.

The National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, NJ upgraded the severity of the winds in coastal areas of the state. Winds will be lighter in northern Delaware.

Rainfall could be up to three inches in central and southern Delaware, with lesser amounts to the north.

In response to the forecast, numerous outdoor events on a busy weekend were canceled or moved indoors.

The storm will come after a period of nice weather in the region.

A tropical storm warning was issued for an area just south of Wilmington, NC, to the Maryland-Delaware line, with the highest winds offshore. Tropical storm-force winds could arrive in North Carolina as soon as Friday before pushing to the north on Saturday.

The storm has not yet been named.
