HONOLULU – The University of Hawai’i football team closes out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a home game against New Mexico State, Saturday, Sept. 23. Kickoff is 6:05 p.m. at Clarence T.C. Ching Complex. The Rainbow Warriors (1-3) and Aggies (2-2) will meet for the third consecutive season. UH holds a commanding 10-1 advantage in the series and has won all six previous meetings in Honolulu.

GAME DAY PROMOTIONS

  • It’s “Youth Night” at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex and Les Murakami Stadium for Hawai’i’s Finest presents “Kickoff at the Les.”
  • Hawaiian Airlines is the game sponsor and will hand out 1,000 roller banners and 4,000 football roster cards located inside Gate 1B.
  • In honor of National Ice Cream Cone Day, our friends at Sodexo and Meadow Gold will give away free ice cream at Hawaii’s Finest Presents, “Kickoff at the Les,” and while supplies last.
  • The Letters Winner Club welcomes the Tuinei family, as father Tom and son Tumua will be recognized between the first and second quarters. Tom graduated from UH in 1980 after being named an Associated Press All-American Honorable Mention in 1979 and was drafted by the Detroit Lions. Tumua played for the Rainbow Warriors from 2014-2018. Recently, his acting and comedy career have taken off, as he has performed in front of sellout crowds in Hawai’i and in the continental U.S.
  • NFL Flag Football Hawai’i will be featured at halftime for a youth game as two teams will play on the same turf as the Rainbow Warriors for five minutes.
  • Hawaii’s Finest presents, “Kickoff at the Les,” will begin at 3 p.m. as gates open. The Vitals will be performing live for fans in attendance. A live DJ will keep fans entertained between sets, along with concessions, a Heineken Beer Garden, and multiple other activities in a carnival-like atmosphere. The Keiki Zone will be upgraded for “Youth Night.”
  • Rainbow Wahine basketball will be honored and recognized in the first quarter for their back-to-back Big West tournament championships, along with the release of their 2023-2024 schedule.
  • The 30 Mānoa Award winners of 2023 will be brought onto the field in the second quarter for their astounding accomplishments.
  • Rainbow Wahine tennis will be recognized for their 2023 regular season and tournament championship in the third quarter.
  • Students entering the facility will be directed to their new entrance located at the left field bullpen gate. They’ll be scanned in for free with their QR code on the H Rewards app.
  • Parking will be open to the public one hour before gates open at 2 p.m.

GAME STORYLINES

  • Hawai’i and New Mexico State will meet for the third consecutive season and fourth time during that span.
  • UH leads the overall series 10-1, winning the first 10 before the Aggies won 45-26 last season in Las Cruces, N.M.
  • UH is 6-0 all-time against the Aggies in Honolulu with the average margin of victory 19.3 points.
  • The series began in 1978 and the schools didn’t play again until 2005 when the Aggies joined the Western Athletic Conference. UH and NMSU played for seven consecutive seasons in conference play (2005-11).
  • The schools played a rare, in-season home-and-home series in 2021 with UH winning both match-ups (41-21 in Las Cruces and 48-34 in Honolulu).
  • UH has scored 40 points or more in eight of the 11 meetings and have averaged 42.5 points per game in the series.
  • For the third straight year, the teams will meet in their respective fifth game of the season.
  • The schools were scheduled to meet four more times through the 2028 season however with NMSU’s entrance into Conference USA this season, the 2024 and ’28 games were cancelled. UH and NMSU are still scheduled to meet again in 2026 and ’27, both in Honolulu.
  • UH is 1-3 to start the year for the third consecutive season after dropping a 55-10 decision to 13th-ranked Oregon last week in Eugene, Ore. UH surrendered season highs in points (55), total yards (560), passing yards (350) and rushing yards (210), while registering lows in points (10), total yards (201) and passing yards (142).
  • All three of UH’s losses this season have come against Power 5 teams (Vanderbilt, Stanford, and Oregon).
  • This week’s game closes out the non-conference portion of UH’s schedule. The Warriors begin Mountain West play next week with a road game at UNLV, Sept. 30, in Las Vegas, Nev.
  • Brayden Schager is 1-1 as a starter against the Aggies. He made his third career start in a 2021 victory and completed 86.2% of his attempts (25-of-29), which was just off the school record for completion percentage (min. 20 att.) held by Sean Schroeder (87.9% vs. Navy, 2013).
  • In two career games vs. NMSU, Schager is 47-of-68 (69%) for 480 yards, one TD and zero INT.
  • NMSU evened its record to 2-2 following a 27-17 victory New Mexico last week in Albuquerque, N.M., while defeating its in-state rival for the second consecutive year. Quarterback Diego Pavia threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a team-high 96 yards in the victory.
  • In last season’s meeting, the Aggies rushed for 357 yards and five touchdowns. The last three games of the series, NMSU has averaged 245 rushing yards per game.
  • This week’s match-up features two of the nation’s top statistical quarterbacks. Schager ranks No. 3 nationally in passing yards (1,103) and No. 4 in passing TDs (11) while Pavia is No. 11 in passing yards (918) and No. 14 in passing TDs (8).
