HONOLULU — The University of Hawai’i football team dropped its fourth straight loss overall and in the series with San Jose State in a 35-0 defeat on Saturday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex.
A miscue on the opening kickoff set the tone for the evening for the Rainbow Warriors (2-7, 0-4 MW) and San Jose State (4-6, 3-2 MW) retained possession of the Dick Tomey Legacy Trophy.
San Jose State converted on 10 of 11 third-down situations in the first half and held the ball for 20:22 in taking a 21-0 lead into halftime. The Spartans extended the lead in the second half with the last score coming on former UH quarterback Chevan Cordeiro’s second touchdown pass of the game.
UH was held to a season-low 198 yards of total offense and was shutout for the first time since a 38-0 loss at Utah State on Nov. 18, 2017. The home shutout was the first since a 28-0 defeat to SMU in 1998.
SJSU finished with 468 yards of total offense led by Cordeiro’s 251 passing yards and running back Kairee Robinson’s 146 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Homecoming night on the Mānoa campus got off to an unusual start when San Jose State sent the opening kickoff deep and recovered the loose ball at the UH 6. The Warrior defense held and a field goal attempt went wide right. But SJSU’s next drive was extended by a UH penalty after a third-down stop and the Spartans marched 76 yards over the next nine plays and took the lead on Quali Conley’s 3-yard touchdown run.
The UH defense forced the game’s first turnover late in the first quarter when linebacker Isaiah Tufaga punched the ball out of the Conley’s grasp and Virdel Edwards II recovered at the UH 38. UH punted the ball away and SJSU put together a 13-play, 86-yard drive that took 8:10 off the clock and Cordeiro threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Nick Nash and the Spartans took a 14-0 lead with 5:16 left in the second quarter.
Robinson scored late in the second quarter on a 5-yard run and again early in the third on a 52-yard burst. Cordeiro capped the scoring with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Nash.
UH quarterback Brayden Schager completed 17 of 29 passes for 132 yards with two interceptions. Quarterback Jake Farrell made his first career appearance in relief of Schager in the fourth quarter.
Safety Peter Manuma led the Warrior defense with seven total tackles. Linebacker Jalen Smith was credited with three of UH’s seven tackles for loss.
Special teams provided one of UH’s highlights of the night with punter Matthew Shipley’s 17-yard run on a fourth-and-14 in the third quarter.
The Rainbow Warriors go back on the road to next face Nevada on Nov. 4 in Reno, Nev.
