After President Donald Trump visited The Villages, WESH 2 News caught up with U.S. Rep. Val Demings, D-Florida, to talk about her role in the impeachment inquiry process.After Thursday’s town hall, Demings will be jumping on a plane back to Washington, D.C.Demings is a member of the House Intelligence Committee, currently heading the impeachment inquiry into Trump. “I think the president needs to just realize that this is not funny. It’s not a joking matter and we’re serious about this investigation,” Demings said.The impeachment inquiry into Trump’s conversation with the president of Ukraine pressed on in Washington as both the president and Demings held events in central Florida.”We have not skipped a beat and we are going to go where the facts lead us in this case,” Demings said.Before coming to The Villages, Trump made news when he openly asked the Chinese government to investigate his political rival Joe Biden, a similar action to what first caused Democrats to open their investigation.”I think he really believes that if he commits a crime in public view that somehow it lessens the seriousness of it. I don’t think that the American people are falling for that again,” Demings said.While in The Villages, Trump barely mentioned the impeachment inquiry.Demings said the inquiry shouldn’t be taken lightly.”We are serious about this investigation and we are not going to stop until we get all the facts that we need and we will pursue articles of impeachment if necessary,” Demings said.Demings said the House Intelligence Committee plans to continue to subpoena as many documents and witnesses as it takes to get to the bottom of this investigation. Trump continues to stand firm that he has done nothing wrong.
