No. 1 Georgia (4-0) will face its first road test of the season against SEC rival Auburn (3-1) on Saturday in ‘The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry’.

Other than a couple of special teams fumbles, the Bulldogs looked at their best last week against UAB. Quarterback Carson Beck had his best performance this season, completing 22-of-32 passes for 338 yards with three touchdowns and another score on the ground.

The Tigers, led by first-year head coach Hugh Freeze, are coming off of a 27-10 loss to Texas A&M.

Auburn is still experimenting at quarterback. Payton Thorne was tabbed as the starter after beating out last year’s starter, Robby Ashford, in fall camp. Thorne hasn’t looked comfortable thus far, and the Tigers’ passing game has struggled as a result.

The run game is where the Tigers have found success. Both quarterbacks will get carries on Saturday, and junior running back Jarquez Hunter is the go-to tailback.

Defensively, Auburn has been tough. They currently rank third in the SEC in pass defense. The rush defense looked good until giving up 209 yards on the ground to the Aggies last week.

The Bulldogs are currently a 14 point favorite over the Tiger, per BetMGM.

Players to watch:

Georgia:

  • WR Arian Smith: The speedster caught his first touchdown of the season last week against UAB. Smith can take the top off a defense when given the chance.
  • RB Daijun Edwards: Edwards has quickly become Georgia’s top tailback after missing the first two games of the season. He’s already amassed 184 yards and three scores.
  • TE Brock Bowers: The Mackey Award winner is coming off of the best game of his season against UAB, catching nine passes for 121 yards and two scores.

UAB:

  • QB Payton Thorne, Robby Ashford, Holden Geriner: Michigan State transfer Payton Thorne got the start this season over last year’s starter Robby Ashford, who’s rotated in at times this year. Freshman Holden Geriner has also seen playing time. We could see a mix of the group on Saturday.
  • Junior RB Jarquez Hunter: The most talented Tigers tailback. A tough, physical runner who can also make defenders miss in space. Georgia got the best of Hunter as a rusher in last year’s matchup, but he did find success as a receiver with three catches for 73 yards, including a 62-yard touchdown.
  • Junior LB Eugene Asante: The leader of the Tigers front-seven. He’s totaled 20 tackles, two sacks and a pass breakup so far this season.
