The Firestone Regional Sports Complex, which includes baseball and softball fields, is slated to receive some new and improved amenities.

During its May 24 meeting, the Firestone Board of Trustees approved two resolutions to fund new scoreboards, water fountains and shade structures at the sports complex, which is located at 6850 Tilbury Ave.

First, the board agreed to spend up to $44,000 for three scoreboards and six drinking fountains that will include bottle-filling features.

The complex’s existing scoreboards are often in need of repair and replacement parts are becoming harder to find.

“The scoreboards and drinking fountains have exceeded their usefulness due to the number of repairs over the years,” Julie Pasillas, Firestone director of public works, said in an email Monday. “It is time to replace them.”

In the second resolution, the board voted in favor of allocating up to $70,230 for the purchase and installation of shade structures over the complex’s bleachers.

Since the complex was first built in 2008, users have expressed the need for additional shade on site, the staff memo said. The complex’s fields are heavily programmed during the summer months.

The drinking fountains are scheduled to be installed by the end of July and the new scoreboards and shade structures are set to be put in sometime this fall, according to Pasillas.

No scheduled games will be impacted by the work.

Money for the forthcoming amenities is already included in the town’s 2023 capital projects fund.

“It’s just … some improvements to keep making that a better facility for the town and its visitors,” Councilman Matt Holcomb said Friday.
