Updated at 2:34 p.m. Aug. 24: The Hawai‘i Department of Health has canceled the high bacteria notification for Kailua Pier Sta. D in Kailua-Kona. Water sample retesting results show enterococci levels no longer exceed the threshold level.

Original story: High levels of bacteria were found at the Kailua Pier, with levels of 591 per 100 mL detected.

The Hawai‘i State Department of Health (DOH) said Wednesday (Aug. 23) they will be retesting Kailua Pier Sta. D, due to the recent findings during a routine beach monitoring and are uncertain about the representativeness of the first sample.

According to a recent report, the beach has historically met the acceptable beach threshold level, and there is no known source of fecal contamination. The DOH has collected another sample and is retesting the site.

DOH will update the notification based on the results of this retesting.
