HONOLULU—The University of Hawai’i women’s tennis team opened their fall season hosting the first day of the UH Ānuenue Invitational on Friday, Oct. 6 at the UH Tennis Complex. Hawai’i came out strong, winning all three doubles matches and five of seven singles matches.
 
On the first day of the tourney, players from UH and Hawai’i Pacific competed in doubles and singles matches.
 
In doubles, UH’s Anna Kern and Joelle Lanz held off HPU’s Leonie Muller and Lynn Kader by a break, 6-4. Hawai’i’s Sheena Masuda teamed up with Ana Vilcek to nearly blank the Sharks’ Jayanne Palma and Vera Markovic, 6-1, while Nelly Knezkova and Nikola Homolkova fired a shutout, defeating Abi Wild and Sara Hejtmankova, 6-0.
 
Three Rainbow Wahine won their singles matches in straight-sets. Kern downed HPU’s Palma, 6-2, 6-0. Lanz held off Hejtmankova, 7-5, 6-2 and Homolkova was dominant defeating Markovic, 6-0, 6-1.
 
Both Knezkova and Masuda won their first sets but fell in the second by tie-breaker before rallying back to win the third. Knezkova knocked off Wild, 6-2, 6-7 (0), 6-0 and Masuda outlasted Muller, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-4.
 
The UH Ānuenue Invitational continues on Saturday, Oct. 7. First serves at the UH Tennis Complex is at 10:00 a.m. HT.
