A robbery Wednesday at a grocery store in San Bernardino led to a brief lockdown of an elementary school and high school nearby.

John Echevarria, spokesman for the San Bernardino Police Department, said officers responded to the El Super grocery store at the intersection of 9th Street and Waterman Avenue.

Two men entered the store and started smashing several glass jewelry displays before stealing several items in the store, Echevarria said. A store security officer fired his gun at the robbers, but nobody was hit by gunfire.

The two suspects ran from the area, officials said. They were described as wearing dark-colored sweaters.

Sierra High School and E. Neal Roberts Elementary School were placed on lockdown from around 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
