An 80-year-old man spoke to WESH 2 News after surviving a violent attack at the hands of a man wielding a frozen can of Coke, investigators said.Don Kane was beaten and badly bruised.Daytona Beach police are searching for the suspect in the seemingly unprovoked attack.Kane shared his story with WESH 2 News and said he’s lucky to be alive. He said he was attacked from behind by someone who was following him at the corner of Halifax Avenue and Riverview Boulevard.Kane has two black eyes, a sore forehead, big cuts on both of his arms and a bump on the back of his head.”I never thought in a million years I would get attacked by some crazy guy that wanted me dead and he was determined. He said, ‘I’m going to kill you,'” Kane said.Kane takes a walk from his house to the Daytona Beach shoreline every day. He says Tuesday morning, he noticed Charles Smyth following him.Police reports show Smyth allegedly struck Kane in the back of the head with a partially frozen Coke can in a mesh net or strap that Smyth was swinging as a weapon.Kane said the attacker hit him over and over again while claiming Kane had called the police.”He saw the blood coming from me, so he decided to give up and he ran toward the beach down Riverview,” Kane said.Kane limped to a nearby fire station to get medical attention.Daytona Beach police want to find and arrest Smyth for aggravated battery.Officers are using pictures from a video to try to locate him.”This guy is a menace. I hope that the police find him,” Kane said.Kane believes his life was in danger, and he says he would have died if Smyth did not stop.”I’m very thankful to be alive, because this guy had anger in his eyes and he was determined that he was going to kill me,” Kane said.Reports show that Daytona Beach firefighters know who Smyth is, and have had incidents in the past involving him.Anyone with information on the suspect is asked to call police.
