It might take high school football teams with young and inexperienced players a few weeks to build momentum, and that’s the case with Sierra Vista.

After losing their first two games of this season, the Mountain Lions picked up their first win on Friday night.

Jayden Fletcher and Josiah Reyes each caught two touchdowns to help Sierra Vista roll to a 49-0 home victory over Cimarron-Memorial.

“It was a good way to get the momentum going,” Sierra Vista coach Thomas Raybon said. “We know what we’re capable of doing, it’s just … we’re so young and inexperienced as far as starters go, we’re just struggling with that fact that a lot of these kids are first-time varsity starters.

“Other than that, getting this little bit of confidence and a win will always help.”

Sierra Vista (1-2) quarterback Ben Tangitau threw four touchdowns and Dominic Fletcher added a rushing touchdown.

There was no easing into the season for Sierra Vista, who opened its season with rival Desert Oasis. Lighting forced the game to move from Aug. 14 to Aug. 21, and the Mountain Lions lost in overtime 36-28.

“Starting off with (Desert Oasis) is fun for everyone else, it’s not fun for me,” Raybon said. “Starting with your rival is tough and then losing the way that we did is not fun.

“After that game, that was the most beat up I’ve seen our team in these last three years. We were beat up. … It’s tough and it lingered a little bit going into Basic.”

Sierra Vista lost at Basic 34-12 on Aug. 28 where the Mountain Lions trialed 21-0 at halftime. Raybon said he was optimistic his team would work through their inexperience.

“This is going to help them grow so much more and when these kids are seniors, our team’s going to be really good,” said Raybon, who has 11 sophomores on the team. “We’re good now, but we’re going to be even better with more experience when they’re seniors.

Sierra Vista next hosts Green Valley at 6 p.m. Thursday to begin league play for the CCSD independent teams. Sierra Vista is in CCSD Independent Division II West Division.
