It’s impossible to thumb through a magazine these days and not notice the abundance of ads for weight loss supplements. The science behind many of these is now based on detoxification principles. This is great news! Thank goodness the diet industry (and their marketing execs!) have learned that in order to actually lose weight and keep off the pounds, one must uproot the core of the problem. And that is– drum roll please… TOXICITY! Detox diets for weight loss are popular today for one reason. They work!

The reason detox diets for weight loss work is because the world we live in, with all of it’s modern advances, is swimming in a sea of toxins. Each day we hear another news report that a new substances has been released into our food or air supply that creates a hazard to our health. The results of this might not be strikingly obvious, but no one is immune to this unfortunate situation which causes more ill health and disease than we would like to admit. Sadly, we are ingesting toxins faster and at a greater rate than ever from contamination in our water, food and air supply. This is the direct cause of many ailments, from general malaise to more sever issues like diabetes and cancer. But while detox dieting has the ability to nip these health issues in the bud, most people considering a detox diet are just seeking weight loss.

Those who chose to detox in order to lose pounds quickly notice that the detoxification benefits far exceed their expectations and reach beyond quickly losing some extra pounds. Since detox diets eradicate the core issue that is at the center of ALL disease, losing weight simply becomes a nice side benefit– the icing on the cake. It’s for that simple reason that in my opinion, the best way to lose weight is through detoxification.

I would like to state that this information is simply my opinion, however it is formed from my years of experience coaching clients through various detox diets and also many more years of self experimentation. My success and failure with both give me the unique perspective to know what does and doesn’t work, and why. Because it seems that there are as many detox diet available as there are toxins in our environment, my intention for this article is to demystify some of the more common techniques used so you can find the best detox diet for you.

The most basic place to begin is with a one day detox diet. To get the most out of your experience, you will want to prepare for this several days in advance by weaning yourself off of caffeine, sugar and other refined foods. By preparing in this way your official one day detox day will go smoother and be more enjoyable. During the day of your official detox you may try drinking nothing but fresh juices as you would during a juice fast or you can stick to whole fruits and vegetables. Many people chose to fast one day per week regularly. It doesn’t seem like much at the time, but it adds up. One day a week adds up to 52 days each year! Think of how much good that will do your body.

Next, if you’ve successfully completed a one day detox diet, you will want to go for a full week. Performing a 7 day detox diet will rejuvenate you more powerfully than a one day detox diet. Beginners will want to eat raw or gently steamed vegetables and fruits while others will want to try fasting for the duration of the cleanse. What is of utmost importance is listening to your body and responding with care. Some hunger is usually experienced for the first few days in a 7 day detox diet, but that hunger should pass once your body enters into “cleanse mode” and you’ll notice increased energy and lightness!

If changing your diet drastically is not you cup of tea (pun intended), you can still achieve excellent results by drinking a daily detox tea once or several times per day. Keep in mind that any detox tea you consume regularly should be free of laxatives even if they are herbal. All laxatives are habit forming when taken regularly. Detox teas that include gentle herbs like Milk Thistle, Pau D’Arco and Licorice can be incredibly beneficial while being gentle at the same time. However, your efforts will increase a thousand fold if you do this in conjunction with making some simple changes in your diet, mainly eliminating processed food.

If you’ve been looking into detox diets for any amount of time you’ve probably noticed the oddly sounding foot detox (or “feet detox”). The foot detox has you apply herbal pads to the soles of your feet that draw out the harmful substances in your body through your lymph channels. Sounds strange, I know, but try it and see what you find! You may see more on those pads in the morning that you’d like to think about. Rest assured, this is all harmful stuff that’s now out of your system and you are another day closer to being free and clear of the harmful toxins that are weighing you down.

To conclude, it doesn’t matter whether you chose a one day detox diet, a 7 day detox diet, a daily detox tea or ever a feet detox. What is important is that you begin eliminating toxins from your system to release your natural energy and radiance. Those who has seen the benefits of detox diets first hand can attest to the abundant energy, glowing skin, peace of mind and clarity of purpose that accompany a detox diet program. But of course, we won’t forget weight loss that lasts!
