The Museum of Natural History at the University of Colorado Boulder recently received an accreditation that brings some of the highest national recognition to the institution.

The American Alliance of Museums first accredited the CU Museum of Natural History in 2003, according to a news release. All museums undergo a reaccreditation review at least every decade to maintain their status.

The alliance analyzes a museum’s mission and goals, and how well it is achieving them, and how a museum meets best practices that are generally agreed upon in the museum industry, according to its website. It requires self-study and peer review and takes between eight and 16 months to complete.

Accreditation “signifies excellence” to governments, funders, the public and more, a news release states.

About 1,070 of the nation’s estimated 33,000 museums are accredited. The CU Museum of Natural History is one of 24 museums accredited in the state.
