The Las Vegas Raiders visit the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday at SoFi Stadium, looking to pick up their second win of the season and snap a four-game losing streak against their division rivals.

After a game in which the Raiders’ defense held the Miami Dolphins to just 13 points while forcing two turnovers and recording five sacks, the Chargers spoke highly of both the Las Vegas defense and coaching staff.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert said the Raiders’ performance against Miami stood out because of the number of playmakers they have across the defense.

“Just a bunch of playmakers,” Herbert said. “You know, they did a good job of limiting the Dolphins and they made a bunch of plays when it mattered.

“They forced a couple turnovers and got after the passer. They fly around and they’ve got no weaknesses.”

That depth was on display in the opener, with defensive ends Kwity Paye and Maxx Crosby combining for 3.5 sacks.

While Paye made an immediate impact in his Raiders debut, Crosby is a familiar challenge for the Chargers, who have seen firsthand the problems he can create as he enters his eighth NFL season after surpassing 70 career sacks against Miami.

Herbert has faced Crosby numerous times during his career and said the veteran defensive end’s ability to make plays from different spots along the defensive front makes him difficult to contain.

“Yeah, he’s very talented,” Herbert said. “He’s able to make plays from so many different positions and he finds the ball and he never quits and he’s got an incredibly high motor and just keeps on working.

“The play is never over for him, and that’s something I really respect about him.”

Crosby’s reputation also extends beyond his production. Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh pointed to his relentless style of play after Crosby recorded eight pressures and five hurries against the Dolphins, ranking second in the NFL in both categories in Week 1.

“He’s earned the respect that everybody has in football for him,” Harbaugh said. “His play style, the way he plays, the disruptive nature. Just so many tools in his arsenal and a relentless player.”

That relentless style has also caught the attention of offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, who joked about the difficulty of dealing with Crosby.

“You’re talking about in my career one of the guys I respect the absolute most,” McDaniel said. “He is upper echelon just because the relentless drive and competitiveness play in and play out is almost unmatched.

“It takes a group of people to stop a player of his caliber. … He is relentless, and I enjoy the challenge, but I’d be cool if he was tired and wanted to take a nap.”

While Crosby remains a focal point of the Raiders defense, Harbaugh said the Chargers are preparing for a Las Vegas team that presents challenges throughout the roster.

“A lot of good,” Harbaugh said when asked what he has seen from the Raiders. “They had an outstanding start with a win.

“They’ve got a lot of good players playing really well and really well coached. Coach (Klint) Kubiak, he’s got them going.”

For Herbert, the Raiders’ Week 1 performance provided an early indication of what the Chargers can expect from a defense that has already turned heads early in the season.

“I think every game catches our attention,” Herbert said. “We obviously have a lot of respect for them as a team. We know how good they can be, and we definitely have to be at our best, have a good week of practice so we can be prepared.”
