A Florida man is being called a hero after he jumped into a neighborhood pond to rescue a man pinned under the water.“That’s a scary sight to see somebody pinned under water, and they’re struggling to get themselves up and they can’t,” said Steve Aller.Aller lives inside the St. James Golf Club community.On the morning of Oct. 1, he was inside his home as the landscapers were outside cutting the grass.“I heard a bang, a loud bang,” Aller said. “And the motor stopped. So, I’m waiting for the thing to restart. You know?”After the restart didn’t come, Aller went outside.He saw the lawnmower upside down in the pond behind his house.“I looked and I see the lawnmower, and I’m looking around for the guy who rides it,” Aller said. “And then, I see bubbles coming up.”Aller said the man was under the water, his legs pinned beneath the lawnmower. The man was trapped face down under the water.Aller jumped in to help.“I was able to get myself down in the water with him, get him up under the arms, and pull him up and just get his nose up above the water,” Aller said. “And he took his first breath after being under the water all that time.“As soon as I got him breathing, that’s when I started screaming for help,” Aller said.A neighbor and two other landscapers heard his screams and jumped into the water.Together, the four men were able to move the lawnmower.But the landscaper was still pinned.“His belt, his actual pants belt, was hooked on something,” Aller said. “And Don was able to reach up under there, undo that, and I had him under the arms and we just pulled him out.”They pulled the man onto the bank, where Aller held him until paramedics arrived.“It’s a once in a lifetime thing,” Aller said. “I could have not been home. Nobody heard it but me. I don’t think it would have turned out the same way.”
