Installation of speed humps on six neighborhood streets was completed in September 2019 as part of the city’s Neighborhood Speed Management Program (NSMP). The program includes education, enforcement activities, engineering treatments such as speed humps and other traffic-calming devices to slow speeding traffic on residential streets.

“Speed humps are designed to slow vehicles with a vertical change in the pavement” said Ryan Noles, transportation planner. “They can be immediately effective in reducing vehicle speeds by up to 20%.”

The speed hump locations on 37th Street, 55th Street, South 41st Street, South 46th Street, Kalmia Avenue and Grinnell Avenue in Boulder, were chosen through an assessment of neighborhood applications and a community engagement process. In March 2019, the Transportation Advisory Board held a public hearing for residents to give input on location proposals prior to finalizing the recommended project list.

The program is part of the City of Boulder’s prioritization of safe transportation. The city strives to keep its streets, sidewalks and paths safe for all modes of transportation. Programs such as the NSMP and Vision Zero, the city’s goal to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries, support transportation safety.
