Porter Hughes had 20 kills, eight digs and six blocks on Tuesday to lead fifth-seeded Basic High to a 27-25, 18-25, 27-25, 26-24 road victory over No. 4 Palo Verde in the 5A state boys volleyball quarterfinals.
Ty Hardy added 13 kills, nine digs and four blocks for the Wolves, and teammate Derek Dennett had 26 assists and seven digs.
The Wolves, who rallied from deficits in all three set wins, play at Centennial in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Thursday.
■ No. 1 Centennial 3, No. 8 Sierra Vista 0: At Centennial, Gavin McColl logged nine kills and four blocks as the Bulldogs cruised past the Mountain Lions 25-20, 25-12, 25-16.
Lincoln Larson added seven kills, two service aces and two blocks for Centennial, and teammate Ty Ahlstrom had 14 service receptions, four digs and two aces.
■ No. 3 Arbor View 3, No. 6 Foothill 0: At Arbor View, Gunnar Robinson had 13 kills, four digs and two blocks to help the Aggies cruise to a 25-17, 25-12, 25-19 victory over the Falcons.
Risden Miller (13 kills, two digs, one block) and Keagan Sugden (41 assists) also came up big for Arbor View, which plays at Shadow Ridge at 6 p.m. Thursday.
■ No. 2 Shadow Ridge 3, No. 7 Coronado 0: At Shadow Ridge, Jayden Elliazar-Keiki had 20 assists to help the Mustangs sweep past the Cougars 25-14, 25-24, 25-20.
Ty Harper helped Shadow Ridge with 10 digs and three aces.
Class 3A state boys volleyball quarterfinals
■ No. 5 Virgin Valley 3, No. 4 The Meadows 0: At The Meadows, Parker Jensen finished with 14 kills and three digs in the Bulldogs’ 25-19, 25-12, 25-18 win over The Meadows.
Dallin Moeai added 20 assists and eight digs for Virgin Valley, which plays at top-seeded Boulder City at 6 p.m. Thursday.
■ No. 3 Moapa Valley 3, No. 6 Doral Academy 0: At Overton, Spencer Stolworthy logged 35 assists and five digs to help the Pirates beat the Dragons 25-21, 25-17, 25-10.
Caden Rawson added 12 kills, six aces and five digs for Moapa, which plays at second-seeded Coral Academy at 6 p.m. Thursday.
5A Southern League softball playoffs
■ No. 4 Centennial 7, No. 8 Liberty 5: At Centennial, Amelia Carlson went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and an RBI to help the Bulldogs stay alive with a victory over the Patriots.
Elise Hanseen added two doubles and two RBIs for Centennial, which scored five runs in the sixth inning to go ahead for good.
Centennial plays another elimination game against Shadow Ridge at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
■ No. 2 Arbor View 12, No. 3 Shadow Ridge 1: At Arbor View, Maliah Harrell went 3-for-3 with a home run and five RBIs, and the Aggies took control with a seven-run second inning in their five-inning win over the Mustangs.
Malayah Tellis had a double and three RBIs to help Arbor View, and teammate Ava Henderson struck out nine while pitching a two-hitter.
The Aggies will face Palo Verde in the winners’ bracket semifinals at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Durango.
■ No. 1 Palo Verde 14, No. 4 Coronado 4: At Palo Verde, Sami Williams had two home runs and three RBIs for the Panthers, who scored eight runs in the first two innings to roll past the Cougars.
Taylor Johns went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and an RBI for Palo Verde, and teammate Keileanna Johnson added a home run and four RBIs.
Bailey Goldberg homered twice to lead Coronado, which hosts Bishop Gorman at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
■ No. 7 Bishop Gorman 11, No. 6 Green Valley 5: At Green Valley, Makamae Eugenio went 4-for-5 with a home run, a double and three RBIs as the Gaels took control early on their way to an 11-5 losers-bracket victory over the Gators.
Gwen Thewes and Samantha Lefever also homered for Gorman, which racked up 17 hits in the game.
