The Orlando police officer who arrested two 6-year-old students at school last week has been fired.

Orlando’s police chief announced the decision during a press conference on Monday.

Orlando police Chief Orlando Rolon did not mince his words when announcing the department had fired Officer Dennis Turner.

Rolon said he was still shocked by Turner’s actions, and apologized directly to the children involved and their families.

“As a grandfather of three children less than 11 years old, I can only imagine how traumatic this was for everyone involved,” Rolon said.

Five days after Orlando police say Turner wrongfully arrested two 6-year-old students, the police chief announced Turner was fired.

“On behalf of myself and the entire Orlando Police Department, I apologize to the children involved and their families,” Rolon said.

Police say they cannot release many of the details as to what exactly happened because the students are minors, but Rolon said there were no excuses for Turner’s actions.

“We were all appalled. We could not fathom the idea of a 6-year-old being put in the back of a police car,” Rolon said.

Police say the two students were arrested during unrelated incidents at school. One was processed through a juvenile center, the other was released before being processed.

Both were charged with misdemeanor battery, but on Monday, State Attorney Aramis Ayala said she will not be pursuing those charges.

“I refuse to knowingly play any role in the school to prison pipeline and at any age. These very young children are to be protected, nurtured and disciplined in a manner that does not rely on the criminal justice system to do it,” Ayala said.

Rolon said Turner had a previous incident on his record involving him and his own child, but didn’t go into any further details.

Rolon also said he has yet to apologize to the families affected by this in person, but is working to do so.
