A wildfire two hours north of Las Vegas spread rapidly overnight Sunday, fire officials said.
The Quail Springs Fire, located in Lincoln County just south of Rachel, has grown to over 1,500 acres in almost 24 hours since it was reported Saturday, the Bureau of Land Management said in a release. Computer-assisted estimates updated the fire size to 2,000 acres as of Sunday afternoon.
The fire is within the Nevada Test and Training Range, a military training area on federal land that is closed to the public regardless of fire activity. The BLM said no residences, public spaces or structures are threatened.
Currently at zero containment, the fire is expected to grow with warm, dry and windy afternoon conditions through Tuesday. A possibility of thunderstorms in the area could contribute to fire spread as well.
“Crews will continue using an indirect confinement strategy and act as necessary to protect values at risk,” the BLM release said. “All values at risk are not publicly accessible and are not a threat to public health or safety if impacted.”
