WAIPAHU, O’ahu — A scoring binge capped the OUTRIGGER Soccer Kickoff with Gonzaga capturing the tournament title with a 7-5 win over the University of Hawai’i women’s soccer team on Sunday at Waipi’o Peninsula Soccer Complex.

The Bulldogs (2-0-0) and Rainbow Wahine (0-1-1) combined for the highest single-match goal total in UH program history in a wild contest that included three penalty kicks in the match and 10 goals in the second half alone.

Hawai’I sophomore Amber Gilbert and junior Mia Foster each scored two goals in the second half and sophomore Cate Sheahan recorded her first collegiate goal in UH’s highest scoring performance since a 5-0 win over Pacific on Sept. 2, 2018.

Gonzaga’s Kate Doyle opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with the first of her two goals and Giana Riley scored on a penalty kick with 4:45 left in the first half to send the Bulldogs into the break with a 2-0 lead.

The ‘Bows struck less than five minutes into the second half with Gilbert scoring on a header on a rebound on the left side of the goal.

Doyle answered less than three minutes later to spark a run of four unanswered goals to push Gonzaga’s lead to 6-1 with Maddie Kemp, Marissa Garcia and Isabelle Moultray contributing to the scoring.

Sheahan finished off of a feed from Fabiola Zamora in the 75th minute for her first UH goal. After Riley scored on her second penalty kick of the match, the Wahine scored three goals in the final eight minutes of the match.

Foster drilled the first goal of her UH career with a deep blast into the top of the net and added her second after the Wahine were awarded a penalty kick.

Gilbert closed the scoring with less than a minute left, converting a pass from Chaima Khammar into her third goal of the tournament. The Wahine also set a program record for goals scored in a defeat, passing the previous mark set in a 5-4 loss to Idaho State on Sept. 14, 2014.

Gonzaga closed the tournament at 2-0-0 to finished atop the standings ahead of Utah Valley (1-0-1), which defeated Houston Christian (0-2-0) 5-1 in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader.

Hawai’i returns to Waipi’o on Thursday to face Sacramento State to close out its season-opening homestand.
