One of my current commission pieces calls for some experimentation in steam bending to create wooden hoops for an oval table base. This video shows my first tests – strips of wood sit in a steam tube for 30 minutes and come out pliable enough to wrap around my pre-made form in the shape of the table base. I learned a lot from this early take and plan to build a much longer tube to allow for steaming 10′ long pieces that should wrap around the full circumference in one go. More detail on this project to come.
