Questions of transparency and safety after a WTTW News report exposes Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration’s early knowledge of problems at a Pilsen migrant shelter.

Emails that were initially redacted show the Johnson administration was made aware in October of unsanitary conditions at the shelter where 5-year-old Jean Carlos Martinez Rivero fell ill. Rivero subsequently died.

This comes as migrants and all of Chicago brave bitter cold temperatures.

Hilco agrees to pay $12.25 million to settle claims following its botched smokestack demolition in Little Village in 2020.

In national politics, Republican frontrunner former President Donald Trump easily wins the Iowa caucus despite 91 criminal indictments — and is favored to win the New Hampshire primary as well.
