An 8-year-old girl was fatally shot Saturday in the Portage Park neighborhood, one of seven people killed by gunfire over the weekend in Chicago.

According to Chicago Police Department figures, 27 people were shot in 25 separate shooting incidents between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday. That included the young girl who was fatally shot Saturday in the 3500 block of North Long Avenue.

According to police, the girl was outside with a group of people at around 9:40 p.m. when a man approached from across the street and shot her once in the head. Another man on the scene attempted to disarm the shooter, and during the struggle, the offender was shot in the face.

He was hospitalized in critical condition, while police said he’s been placed into custody and charges are pending. The girl was taken to Stroger Hospital where she was pronounced dead. According to the Chicago Sun-Times,…
