The Boulder County District Attorney’s Office is investigating a series of debt collection letters from a since-closed eye care center that appear to have been sent to former customers that did not have any outstanding payments due.

Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty said his office has heard more than a dozen reports from former customers of Pearl Street Eye and Laser Center, which the DA’s Office said is apparently now closed.

Dougherty said the former customers all received debt collection letters for services performed, even though all of them said they did not owe any money to the business.

The debt collection agency that sent out the letters, Capital Accounts, is a legitimate business based out of Tennessee.

Capital Accounts has agreed to put the accounts for letters sent out in August on hold, and will not be actively pursued until the debts can be verified. Capital Accounts also told the District Attorney’s Office it will not contact any credit reporting agency about the debt until the accounts are verified.

The Boulder District Attorney’s Office has not been able to successfully reach the owners of Pearl Street Eye and Laser Center at this time, but the office’s Community Protection Division is actively investigating the case.

“The District Attorney’s Office is actively seeking to communicate with the business owners about the debt collection notices our community members have received,” Dougherty wrote in a release.

According to its website, Pearl Street Eye is “making a gradual transition to new ownership. At the present time there are no doctors seeing patients at Pearl Street Eye.”

Anyone who has received the letter but believes they do not owe any money should not pay the amount and should instead contest the debt in writing to Capital Accounts. Disputes can be sent by email to service@capitalbillpay.com, by fax to 1-800-296-3317, or by mail to Capital Accounts, P.O. Box 140065, Nashville, TN, 37214-0065.
